Beginning Life In Kansas City

After several months of prayer and seeking wise counsel, I followed my heart and the Lord's leading and moved to Kansas City, Missouri.

You might recall in a previous post I mentioned a conversation with a man who voiced his intention to steal my heart. Well, he did just that. Not only did he win me over with his affection, this God-fearing and committed Christian restored my faith in mature love. We are very different people (did I mention we are VERY different?) with very few shared life experiences. We have different political beliefs, different food palates, and almost opposing ideas on decorating and fashion. And to boot, he's 10 years older. Under normal circumstances that would have been a recipe for disaster, but our circumstances weren't normal. As long-time singles we both recognize that the most important things (love for God, commitment to follow Christ, Christ-like character, commitment to each other, etc.) are the things that really matter. The core of who the person is counts for more than some of those other traits that may have been "important" when we were 25.

The more we talked, the more I recognized him as one of God's most precious gems. Not a perfect man for sure, but one who works hard to be the best person he can be. He's gentle and kind, with the biggest heart this side of heaven. And he loves me well. He's not intimidated by me and refuses to give in to my every desire. He prays for me and with me; he boldly shares the nuggets he gathers from his Bible study time. He's a good man, and I love him.

When we talked about the possibility of a future together, it made sense for me to move to Kansas City. I recently graduated from DTS and had to move out of my on-campus apartment at the end of June. He owns property in Kansas City and is established in ministry with his local church. Since I had no desire to remain in Dallas and he had no desire to move to Dallas, Kansas City (for now) was the best option.

I've been here a week and things are going well. I'm looking for work and a permanent place to live, and I have faith that the details will be worked out. As for the relationship, we're both pretty excited. We've had challenges and will have more; we've not agreed on everything. But we're learning to live around each other and to get a feel for each other's temperament. He's tolerant of my moods and I'm adjusting to his "quirks." Neither of us can say what the future holds; we're taking one day at a time trusting God to lead. Our desire is that our relationship will culminate in marriage, however we both say, "not my will, but Thy will be done."

So for now, I'm enjoying my new life in Kansas City and I expect to enjoy it for as long as the Lord allows me (and us) to stay here.
