Being stylish can be an addictive pursuit. Many people enjoy wearing the latest fashions, not as a statement but as an expression of their creativity, sometimes shopping week after week to find that perfect piece.
Recently I've observed a trend of women wearing a shirt, short dress or sweater over tights with boots. The shirt, dress, or sweater usually comes down just far enough to cover her butt and is about mid-thigh or shorter. I've generally seen it on what appear to be women under 30, but personally know of several 30+ women (and one in her 40s) who also "rock" this style.
Am I just getting old or is modesty, especially among Christian women, no longer in vogue? Can a believer wear a shirt over tights (or any of a number of other styles which leave very little to the imagination) and still honor God? Can a woman's attire be a stumbling block or does a man bear sole responsibility for his reaction to her dress? I'm not condemning nor judging, just asking honest questions.
I don't believe a woman has to be covered from head to toe to be modestly dressed. Nor do I believe she can only wear dresses, that she can't go sleeveless, and that she can't show her toes. I understand that outward dress is not the determining factor (it's not even a factor) for spending eternity with the King. But believers are called to a lifestyle of holiness and I believe the way we adorn our bodies (both men and women) is subject to that mandate. We owe it to our God, ourselves, and our brothers (or sisters) to honor God in our attire so that we do not negatively affect another believer's walk.
1 Timothy 2:9-10
Likewise the women are to dress in suitable apparel, with modesty and self-control. Their adornment must not be with braided hair and gold or pearls or expensive clothing, but with good deeds, as is proper for women who profess reverence for God.
1 John 2:10
Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble.
I agree with you a 100% on this one.
ReplyDeleteThe comment you made "but believers are called to a lifestyle of holiness" is not taught anymore. Holiness now is just another term we use to try and be deep wonders. We have forgotten that Holiness is a standard of life, it is life lived according to THE WORD. We want to live according to "G(g)od knows my heart" these days. Because I truly believe that the stuff we are worshipping (truly not God these days) is what knows our hearts, because with some of the things we do as Christians, God probably can't even look at our hearts because they are so corrupt. I'm sorry if I sound negative about Christianity, but just tired of the "I can live any kind of way" and "God's grace is supposed to abound". NOT!!!!!!!
